As I entered the park, I saw what might have been an American Black Duck. It was very dark in color, and at quite distance, so I wasn't sure, but they have been spotted in this area.
I noticed a little area of the park where I hadn't explored before. It wasn't much a road - very short - but I took the turn in anyway. When I got out of the car to take a picture of this view, I heard a lot of bird noises. There were dozens of willets in the grasses. Some were babies calling for their parents..
Before I could get a picture though, I noticed a spot of red in the grass. A male Red-Winged Blackbird was trying to get a baby to fly. He would run back, flap his wings, but stay on the ground and run toward the baby. Then he would circle around and do it again. I didn't see the baby fly, but the adult stayed with the baby and they pecked at the grasses. .
Since the Red-Wings were at such a great distance, I turned my attention toward the Willets. .
I've never seen so many of them in one place - just pecking in the grasses and calling out. Occasionally, they would take flight, chattering away..
I left the area and watched an Osprey flying overhead.
Pulling up to a pool, I spotted some Semi-Palmated Plovers.
...and some small Sandpipers.
As I was getting back into the car again, I spotted a Grackle calling out from a small tree across the road.

Wow, there's some stunning shots on here - great work!
Spring is so full of bird life and you captured it very well.. thanks lin.. have a beautiful day!
All stunning Lin, I think I may have said it before, but this is some place you live.
Looks like fun - this place! Thank you for sharing and Cheers, Klaus!
Some more stunners and at last I come to meat sandpiper :)
What a fun adventure in the park. Your photos, esp close ups, are amazing. Professional quality. Did I tell you I grew up in Conn, Trumbull, Fairfield area?
Love hearing the story behind the photos - especially of the redwinged trying to teach his baby to fly - very sweet!
Hi Sandpiper, lovely post again, you sure see a lot of birds..did I read somewhere that the sandpiper is now considered ond of the endangered species??? Cheers.
ooops spell error...bad eyes is excuse...supposed to say"one of the endangered species" not ond...;-)
Your photos of wild life are simply wonderful to behold.
I love the mother and baby bird learning to fly. I hope she finally got off the ground...
Beautiful place you visit there.
Can you instruct me how to get my copyright sign on the photo itself?
Thanks if you can do this.
And thanks for coming to my blog today. I'll respond to you there.
Beautiful, Lin...I love the sea oats, but the magic of the birds is overwhelming!
I must make a trip to the shores soon, not just the riverbank which I visit most every day. Your walks and journeys are inspiring; and its fun when you find a whole bunch of one species isn't it, like the Willets you found. I notice that it seems there are often more large groups near water than on walking trails.
The grackle in the tree - what a great shot!
I hope things are going well for your hubby and your mom.

Great shots again. Love the red winged blackbird trying to get the baby to fly. Grackles....ooh, we have a lot of them here in the Dallas area and they poop all over and make a huge mess.

I really like those Willets - never saw one where I live. You sure do see a lot on your little 'wildlife runs'!
Great!
i love yr blog!!!!!!!!
u got some stunning photos here!
Another wonderful walk. Thanks Lin for sharing. That pic of the sunset on the side is totally amazing too!!
Very lovely scenery and interesting bird life. So those are Willets - WOW!!
You are so very observant. I envy you your time out in the wild.
Love that blackbird daddy teaching his baby to fly.
Good morning everyone, Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I loved reading them all!
There are still some things going on with Mr. Sandpiper's eye, so I'm not yet fully up and running on the computer yet. I catch little bits of time when I can. I'm looking forward to catching up and visiting all of your blogs as soon as I can.
Sukipoet - I didn't know you lived in CT. We drive through Trumbull when we go down to the beach. Fairfield is a bit further away, but we go there sometimes, too.
Island Rambles - Some types of sandpipers are listed, but I'm not sure about the ones I saw at the shore that day. I'm pretty sure I saw semipalmated sandpipers, western sandpipers, and least sandpipers. Areas of the continent make a difference, too. I don't know if that helps or not with your question.
Lynn, I went to your blog and replied to your copyright symbol question there. Hope it helps.
Me ANN My Camera, I agree about the water. When I want to see wildlife around here, I try to find marshy areas where there is water - fresh water, salt water - doesn't matter. That's were the critters go.
Thank you so much everyone. I promise to catch up with your blogs. I'm trying to get to a few each day, but my time is limited, so doing the best I can.
Lin: You are my hero with these great posts from nature.
Lovely collection. Your small Sandpiper was infact a Semipalmated Sandpiper just in case you were wondering :-)
I'm glad you got out for a while! The first shot is very pretty! How interesting about the blackbird teaching the young one! And the Willets are certainly interesting looking! I bet you go back to that turning again :-) Great post as always. Hope hubby's eye keeps improving.
Aw, Fishing Guy, Thank you! You're so nice. Your pictures are terrific and I enjoy your blog very much.
Hi Nick, Thanks for the I.D. There were Semipalmated, Western, and Least Sandpipers there that day, but when it comes to sandpipers, I just can't seem to sort them out.
Hi Mary, Nice to see you. Thanks for the good wishes. I think maybe he's still having some eye problems. Friday will tell us more.
I haven't been to the shore for some time. Seeing this post is making me long to go back.
Larry, If you can get down to Hammonassett soon, I would recommmend it before the sun worshipping crowds arrive. Lots of baby bird activity down there now.
Sooooo beautiful. Oh it makes me not want to be at my desk right now. I the RWBlack Bird trying to get its young to fly. Oh my word. I also notice the cardinal that right beneath this post. The best I've EVER seen. It is absolute and utter elegance. What you are doing is SO important because you are reminding the world of "what is SO important!"
Thank you, Robin. I'm really glad you like the pictures! I don't know what I would do if there weren't nature places around.
